Organic Family Hymnal Zip
The band Rend Collective started from a ministry in Northern Ireland and now tours in the United States a few months each year. Rend Collective wants to perform music that makes people smile, while celebrating their faith. It’s hard to watch a YouTube video of the Northern Ireland band performing and not smile. With their bow ties and folk-indie look, their banjoes and string instruments, and their take on an Irish folk percussion instrument called a Jingling Johnny, their joy while performing can be infectious. That’s exactly how they want their faith to be seen – a celebration that lifts the spirit.

The group started as a church movement created in 2001 by Gareth Gilkeson, Ali’s husband. It was geared to people in their 20s and 30s and was called Rend after two verses in the Bible – Isaiah 64:1 (“Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!”) and Joel 2:13 (“Rend your heart and not your garments”). The group would gather in the small town of Bangor in Northern Ireland and sometimes sing songs by contemporary Christian artists like Matt Redman and Chris Tomlin. “It was more of a prayer meeting, actually, every week,” Ali Gilkeson said. “Really that time was just about trying to see God together and pursue what he had for our lives.” After about five years, Gareth Gilkeson and Chris Llewellyn felt “God was putting some songs on their hearts,” Ali said.
They started a musical worship project that became known as the Rend Collective. In 2010, the band released its first album, “Organic Family Hymnal.” They recorded an acoustic album, “Campfire,” live around a campfire on a beach near Bangor. They shot a music video on a fishing boat in the Irish Sea. Fruity loops 7 system requirements. They’ve even used children’s instruments on recordings. When it was first suggested they tour in America, Ali said the group wasn’t sure they were ready for such a leap. So they prayed about it.
Two weeks later, they received an email from Chris Tomlin inviting them to come on tour with him in 2011. They’ve been touring the U.S. A few months each year ever since. “We fell in love with your country and fell in love with your people,” Ali said. “It’s been wonderful.” Ali said the band’s latest album, “The Art of Celebration” released in 2014, is intended to inspire people to boldly approach God during their struggles rather than stepping away from God. “Our celebration is knowing that we’re free from condemnation,” she said. They hope their music will help others find joy and strength in their faith.
“The joy of the Lord is our strength,” Ali said. “That is where we find our strength when we’re going through hard times, when we’re going through struggles. It’s the joy of the Lord, and we wanted to write music that really helped people pursue that − to try and find their celebration story amidst the storm that they’re living in.” Love Ran Red Tour What: Concert featuring Chris Tomlin, Tenth Avenue North and Rend Collective When: Saturday, Feb.
