It should b e understood that recording a file to disk to not ensure that it's recorded in one piece. In fact, frequently files are recorded in several pieces. In order to then access that file requires that each piece of that file be brought up seperately. The effect of which can slow performance and can lead to other problems in severe cases.

Disk defrag must be run regularly (or set to auto defrag) to keep the hard drive free of fragmentation and maintain the performance of the computer at a high level.
